  • Why is Damascus steel the most sought-after material in history?

    Damascus blade

It all started in the 3rd century !

With its almost mystical and easily recognizable patterns, Damascus steel is a highly valued steel, praised for its impressive properties.

There is a difference between Damascus steel and Damasteel®.
While the second one is the world famous brand that produces these blades nowadays, Damascus steel comes from much further back in History!

The first traces of Damascus like steel can be traced back in India, 2,000 years ago under the name of "Wootz".
These mesmerizing blades were reserved only for the elite, as it required considerable skill to produce it.
Weapons and other items made with this noble technic gained popularity in the 3rd or 4th century in the city of Damascus, Syria. A city that popularized the Damascus steel and made it their own.

Unfortunately, this ancient style of Damascus steel is now lost. The techniques and knowledge vanished sometimes in the 1700's for unknown reasons.

Damascus steel or Damasteel®? It’s (almost) the same.

While the first type of Damascus steel is now lost to history, modern Damasteel® is very close to the original.
If the process is different, the quality and the uniqueness of each blade remain the same. Damasteel® uses the knowledge of the ancient tradition, combined with the best assets of today's steel!

Made in Sweden, Damasteel® blades have a historical heritage in knife making.
Since 1676, the town of Söderfors has been known for forging Damascus Steel. A tradition that began long ago when the Vikings lived in the area!

    Did you know?

In 1538, Francesco Maria I della Rovere, the Italian Duke of Urbino, commissioned a Milan armorer by the name of Fillipo Negroli to create a piece of armor that would protect him from gunfire.

The result was the first “bulletproof vest” made most likely of Damascus steel that could repel the bullets of that time. A pity however because the duke died poisoned.
