  • How Old Is the Oldest Cuban Cigar Brand?

    cigar box of Cabañas brand

    Cabañas Habana

To answer this question, let's go back to the 19th century, when King Ferdinand VII of Spain was the colonial overlord of Cuba.
Commercial cigar production was not authorized by the Spanish crown, but a certain Francisco Cabañas did not care about that.

Despite the ban, he launched his own commercial production in 1810, and named his brand "Cabañas" (some say he launched it in 1797).

It seems that Francisco had a good intuition, because in 1821, King Ferdinand passed a decree authorizing the cultivation and manufacture of cigars for export.
It was at this point that tobacco production in Cuba reached a new level!

After Cabañas, tobacco plantations and new brands flourished on the island, and the most prestigious Cuban brands appeared.
Por Larrañaga in 1834, Ramón Allones in the late 1830s, Punch in 1840, H.
Upmann in 1844, Partagás in 1845, Hoyo de Monterrey in 1865, Romeo y Julieta in 1873, and La Gloria Cubana in 1885.

Until very recently, Cabañas existed in the form of machine-made cigars.
    Habanos stopped production in 2004.

But in 2019, a special collaboration between JR cigars and My Father has brought this brand back to life, with a JR-exclusive handcrafted cigar made in Nicaragua!
